The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.
The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
