The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

As any prominent awards ceremony nears, you'll find a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
