"Any idea when you're interviewing the Haim sisters?" an inquiry pops up. "My request was to ask if I can be their extra sister."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'After your show, I bought a bass'," states Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the biggest honour. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire people to make music."

The band are speaking from a break, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in contention for the award.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the accolade resonates with the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant milestone," continues Alana. "However we're just thankful for the pioneers that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The album was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that strange transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The lyrics track endings and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them determining in real life who they are becoming.

"I love way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to consciously practice shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That developed confidence demanded a different sonic direction – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The band's candor shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Path

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their position in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an global following.

Yet the band will consistently be their primary focus.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was a young child," shares Alana. "There is no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still going strong."
