New research indicates that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
People who have come off the medication report a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
